Hindu Latão Placa com Deidade e Acompanhantes

A very fine Hindu plaque made of brass, featuring a D-shaped body with an arch at the top, with a coiled cobra at the apex of the arch. A sequence of large leaf-like shapes frames the top of the plaque. Modelled in high relief, the piece displays a central deity, depicted holding an attribute in each of his four hands, including a dagger and a fork-like sceptre. There are two smaller figures at either side of his feet: a stylised horned zoomorph to the left and an attendant to the right. Two quadrupeds, possibly bulls or calves are lying down near the edges of the composition. A crescent and a sun disc are depicted in the corners of the arch, above the deity. Twelve perforations frame the main deity, possibly to attach the plaque to something. The reverse is flat except for the concave outline of the main figure. A label from the previous collection to the bottom right corner. Signs of wear to the surface as consistent with age. Hinduism is an ancient Indian religion that honours many deities and emphasises dharma, karma, and spiritual liberation. Brass plaques depicting gods, symbols, or sacred stories like this fine piece, serve as devotional art in homes and temples. These plaques reflect faith, guide worship, and connect believers to divine presence through detailed, symbolic craftsmanship. Measurements: W 15.7cm x H 21.8cm Provenance: From the Jeffrey Romer important collection of Hindu art, 1990s. Ex central London gallery.
