A high-quality rectangular lacquer bundai 文台 (writing table) featuring an intricate design of an open veranda of a spacious house, enclosed by a checkered-patterned fence. Near the edge, a large Japanese apricot tree 梅 (ume) with thick, curving branches displays a few buds just beginning to bloom. Adjacent to the veranda, tall bamboo 竹 (take) grows elegantly, while inside, glimpses of a folding screen 屏風 (byôbu) and long pieces of fabric are shown.
The artwork is rendered in golden, silver, and black hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) and thick takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer design), with highlights of nashiji 梨子地 (sprinkled gold lacquer).
The table’s upper surface curves gently upwards at the edges, adorned with fitted hardware chiselled with a scrolling foliage (karakusa) motif. It is supported by four accolade-shaped feet, each decorated with a refined floral diaper design.
Dimensions:
Height 14.4 cm, Width 63.7 cm, Depth 36.1 cm.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).
The bundai is in very good original condition, with minimal traces of wear consistent with age. A small old chip is present at the raised point of the roof. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
