【Product details】
An original Meiji period woodblock print triptych by Yōshū Chikanobu (1838–1912), a prominent ukiyo-e artist who trained in the Kano school before studying under Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Toyohara Kunichika. Chikanobu became a leading figure in Meiji-era printmaking, known for his dynamic historical scenes and depictions of contemporary events.
This dramatic triptych, titled Kagoshima Denpōki Kōtotsugawa Sensō no Zu (Battle of the Kōtotsu River from the Kagoshima Chronicle), was published in 1877 (Meiji 10) by Kimura Seisuke. It depicts an intense episode from the Satsuma Rebellion, portraying fierce combat between government forces and Satsuma rebels at Kōtotsu River in Kagoshima.
The print strikingly illustrates the participation of female warriors in the conflict — a rare and notable subject in 19th-century Japanese art — with armed women bravely battling amid boats and a stone bridge, their movements captured with vigorous lines and vivid colours.
Condition: Some foxing, water stains, discolouration, wormholes, and tears present. Please refer carefully to the photos for a full assessment of condition.
