Tagame Gengorou - Japanese Gay Erotic Artbook: vol.1 - 2022

Japanese Gay Erotic Artbook: Vol.1 – A Rediscovery of Early Gay Erotic Artists This groundbreaking volume re-evaluates the forgotten “gay erotic artists” whose works appeared in early gay magazines in Japan. For decades, their illustrations were treated as disposable entertainment within the pages of adult magazines, consumed and then forgotten—often without even crediting the artists. No efforts were made to preserve or rediscover their works, leaving much of Japan’s early gay visual culture overlooked and undocumented. This book brings these artists back into the spotlight. Featured are works by Tatsuji Okawa, Sanshi Funayama, Tsuyoshi Mishima, Takeshi Hirano, and others—artists who debuted in Fūzoku Kitan (1960~) and later contributed to the pioneering gay magazines Barazoku, Sabu, Adon, and other publications from the formative years of Japanese gay media. In addition, the book includes numerous works by anonymous artists who appeared in Fūzoku Kitan, offering a rare and comprehensive view of this early creative period. The volume also contains an essay by Gengoroh Tagame, one of Japan’s most celebrated contemporary gay artists, titled “A Brief History of Japanese Gay Erotic Art.” Detailed commentary on each artist and their works is also included. A total of 139 uncensored drawings are featured, nearly half in color and half in black and white. All essays—covering the history of Japanese gay erotic art and biographies of each artist—are fully translated into English.
