Gosho’ningyô 御所人形 (boneca do palácio) - Gofun paste, seda brocada, cabelo - Japão - Início do século XIX (fase final do período Edo)

A charming gosho’ningyô 御所人形 (palace doll) depicting a plump child standing invitingly, with a cheerful expression. The figure has a brilliant white complexion and a delicately hand-painted serene face, evoking the innocence of a young noble child. In its left hand, the child holds a folding fan 扇子 (sensu), while impressively balancing a gold-coloured magic mallet 打ち出の小槌 (uchide no kozuchi) on the right. The mallet is adorned with finely painted polychrome flowers. The child wears a nobleman’s black eboshi 烏帽子, and an orange silk bib and haori 羽織, both hand-embroidered with auspicious cranes 鶴 (tsuru). The smooth surface is achieved through multiple layers of gofun 胡粉, a white pigment made from finely ground itabo oyster shells (Ostrea denselamellosa). The doll is presented on a rectangular textile-covered base. Period: Japan – First half 19th century (Late Edo period) Dimensions (excl. base): Height 34.5 cm, Width 28.5 cm, Depth 12 cm Considering its age of over two centuries, the doll remains in a good restored condition, with expected signs of wear such as minor age-related cracks to the gofun around the legs, arms and face. Hair loss is visible, which is not uncommon for dolls of this age. The mallet is not entirely stable when balanced. Please refer to the photos for a detailed condition reference. Gosho’ningyô 御所人形, or “Court Dolls,” were traditionally gifted among the nobility and Imperial Court, symbolising good fortune, prosperity, and joy. They were cherished heirlooms, often passed down through generations as treasured objects of art. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
