Gandhara Estuque Figura de músico. Estuque. 13,5 cm de altura. Século I - III d.C.

Musican figure Stucco Gandhara, 1st - 3rd century A.D. 13,5 cm height with stand, 9 cm height without stand. Condition: Very good, see photos. Provenance: Private collection, France, 1970. The sculptures of the Gandhara culture represent one of the most refined artistic expressions of ancient Buddhist art. This culture flourished between the 1st and 5th centuries AD in a region covering parts of present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan, where Greek, Roman, Persian, and Indian influences merged. Among the materials used for sculpture, stucco played a fundamental role, especially during the Kushan and Gupta periods. Stucco, a mixture of plaster, lime, and sand, allowed artists to model in great detail the figures of the Buddha, bodhisattvas, and celestial beings that decorated monasteries and stupas. Unlike stone or bronze, stucco offered a smooth surface that facilitated the creation of serene expressions and delicate folds in the clothing, giving the sculptures a unique realism and spirituality. Many of these works retained traces of polychrome paint, suggesting that they were originally richly decorated. The stucco sculptures of Gandhara reflect a unique cultural synthesis: Hellenistic heritage is combined with Buddhist iconography to represent the figure of the Buddha with idealized human features. These pieces were not only objects of devotion, but also testimonies to the intense cultural exchange that characterized the Silk Road.
