It is part of Hokusai’s celebrated Large Flower Series (大型花卉シリーズ) from his later career. In the 1960s, this work was reissued using traditional woodblock techniques, supervised by Tadao Takamizawa. Centered on a cluster of irises (菖蒲), the composition features petals with intricate purple-brown and white marbling, paired with supple, vivid green foliage. A lifelike grasshopper is tucked among the leaves — the piece retains the refined charm of ukiyo-e’s flower-and-insect (花鳥草虫) genre, while showcasing Hokusai’s masterful eye for natural detail in his later years.
