Absolute Auction Yuzan Mori Depicts Minamoto no Yoshiie at the Historic Nakoso Barrier Japanese - Mori Yuzan (1869 - 1917) 森雄山 - Japão (Sem preço de reserva)
A refined Japanese hanging scroll executed in hand painted ink and colors on silk depicting Minamoto no Yoshiie at the legendary Nakoso Barrier, created by the distinguished artist Mori Yuzan, active from the Meiji to Taisho periods.
Minamoto no Yoshiie also known as Hachimantaro Yoshiie is revered as one of the most prominent warrior leaders of the Heian era. This scroll portrays him with elegance as he rides through the serene landscape of Nakoso an ancient checkpoint steeped in poetry and history.
Nakoso is especially famous for a classical poem attributed to Yoshiie himself recorded in the imperial anthology Senzai Wakashu. After completing the Later Three Years War he is said to have composed the following waka upon passing the barrier
Fuku kaze o
Nakoso no seki to
omoedomo
michimose ni chiru
yama zakura kana
I thought the barrier of Nakoso would hold back the wind
yet it blows on scattering mountain cherry blossoms
until the path is carpeted with petals
This poem highlights Yoshiie’s dual qualities of martial prowess and refined literary talent. Mori Yuzan’s painting captures this quiet dignity and the harmony between the warrior and the natural surroundings.
The mounting features elegant brocade and the scroll ends are crafted from cattle bone giving the piece a classical and refined presence. A valuable work for collectors of samurai art waka poetry and Meiji to Taisho painting.
This item will be securely packed and shipped from Japan.

Dear Valued Buyers in Europe, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you. Thanks to your continued support, I have been able to carry on my business for more than ten years. As of June 28, 2025, new regulations have taken full effect in the European Union concerning the importation of cultural property from outside the EU. Under these rules, when items are classified as “Cultural Property” or as antiques over 100 years old, and they are not accompanied by an Export Permit for Cultural Property, certain restrictions may apply under both Italian law and EU regulations. This Export Permit for Cultural Property has traditionally been required when exporting items such as swords, and obtaining it generally takes about one month. For this reason, when shipping hanging scrolls that are more than 100 years old, I will continue to use the same HS code as for those less than 100 years old. I sincerely ask for your kind understanding regarding this matter. With gratitude and respect,
