Sarutahiko no Mikoto 猿田彦命 Tengu 天狗 Long‐Nosed Goblin Yokai / Japanese Bicchu Kagura wooden folk craft mask
Sarutahiko no Mikoto is a deity of the Japanese religion of Shinto, he is the leader of the earthly kami. Sarutahiko no Mikoto was also the head of the kunitsukami. He is depicted as a towering man with a large beard, jeweled spear, ruddy face, and long nose.
Tengu ("Heavenly Dog" or "Heavenly Sentinel") are a type of legendary creature found in Japanese folk religion. They are considered a type of yōkai (supernatural beings) or Shinto kami (gods).
A powerful hand-carved wooden mask representing Sarutahiko or Tengu, crafted during Japan’s Showa period. With its exaggerated features—long nose, fierce eyes, and expressive mouth—this mask embodies the mythical and protective qualities associated with these legendary figures. Sarutahiko is a deity of guidance and transition in Japanese mythology, often linked to the Tengu, a mountain spirit known for martial prowess and spiritual guardianship. Masks like this were used in folk rituals, festivals, and theatrical performances to invoke protection, ward off evil, or celebrate seasonal transitions. The mask is carved from wood and painted in vivid red tones, with natural hair elements enhancing its dramatic presence. Signs of age and use are visible, adding authenticity and character. A braided cord is attached for wear or display. A striking and culturally rich artifact for collectors of Japanese masks, folk religion, and traditional performance arts.
