Yoshitoshi was known for his dynamic compositions and psychological depth, producing works until shortly before his death at age 54. This triptych, titled Meiji Shōshi Nenkan Kiji Kagoshima-kenka Zokuto Hōki no Jiken (Historical Account of the Kagoshima Prefecture Rebellion Incident), depicts the dramatic events at the outset of the Satsuma Rebellion. The right-hand panel’s text describes the government’s attempt to transport munitions from the Kagoshima arsenal, an act thwarted by Satsuma samurai—marking the rebellion’s beginning. The central figure is Saigō Takamori, surrounded by key leaders Shinohara Kunimoto and Kirino Toshiaki, with their forces preparing to resist. Yoshitoshi captures the tense atmosphere, with cannon fire, flags bearing the Satsuma crest, and determined warriors scaling coastal cliffs. This work was published by Ōkura Sonbei, with the woodblock cutting by Tsukioka Yonejirō. Condition: Signs of age including surface scuffs, stains, wormholes, tears, and areas where the paper has thinned. Please refer carefully to the photographs for a detailed assessment of condition. A significant historical document in visual form, this triptych vividly illustrates the spirit of resistance at the dawn of the Meiji era and stands as a compelling example of Yoshitoshi’s mastery.
