Item Description:
A complete set of 3 volumes (Upper, Middle, Lower) from the “Iroha Bunko – Part 17” (いろは文庫 十七編) series, written by the celebrated Edo-period author Tamenaga Shunsui (為永春水) and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (歌川国貞), one of the most prolific and renowned ukiyo-e artists of the 19th century.
This kusazōshi (illustrated book) features a captivating blend of dramatic storytelling, poetic interludes, and richly rendered woodblock prints. The narrative presents scenes of everyday Edo life—featuring townspeople, samurai, and courtesans—with humor, romance, and social insight. Kunisada’s illustrations are dynamic and expressive, capturing theatrical poses, elegant kimono patterns, and emotional interactions with precision and flair.
The books are bound in traditional fukuro-toji (pouch binding) using handmade washi paper, and the original covers are decorated with bold tomoe crest patterns in blue and red. The hand-colored prints are vibrant and detailed, and many pages feature double-page spreads filled with intricate line work and narrative elements.
This edition is part of the larger Iroha Bunko series, which was widely read during the Edo period for its blend of moral instruction and entertainment. Each volume includes complete text and illustrations, offering a valuable glimpse into the literature, fashion, and popular culture of late Edo Japan.
