A Maki-e Urushi traditional comb or Kushi (櫛)
Japan - Early 20th century
Urushi: A natural lacquer made from the sap of the lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum), which forms an extremely durable, glossy layer after curing.
Maki-e (蒔絵): The art of "scattered painting," in which metallic powders (gold, silver, copper) are sprinkled over wet urushi lacquer to create patterns.
Maki-e Urushi: This Kushi is a fine example of the combination of these techniques, resulting in an object with refined, seasonal and traditional Japanese motifs, in contrast to the deep color of the lacquer.
Width = 9.3 cm
Weight = 11.4 g
In good condition. Normal traces of age and use. Light wear overall. Some more significant wear one one of the leaves on both sides, as this is where the comb was repeatedly held during use.
