Seymchan Meteorite
Pallasite, polished slice, translucent olivines. Magadan, Russia
The Seymchan meteorite was discovered in 1967 in the Magadan region of the Russian Far East, near the settlement of the same name. The first fragment weighed 272.3 kg, and the second, found later that same year, weighed 51 kg. Initially, it was classified as a purely iron meteorite, but after new fragments were discovered in 2004—some of which contained olivine crystals—it was reclassified as a pallasite.
Its composition is unusually diverse—some portions are almost entirely metallic (kamacite and taenite), while others contain abundant inclusions of olivine. When etched, the metallic part reveals the characteristic Widmanstätten patterns. In addition to the main minerals, the meteorite also contains troilite, schreibersite, and chromite.
