Rosenthal - Tapio Wirkkala - Jarra - Sculptural 22531 - Vidro - Modernismo Escandinavo

Tapio Wirkkala for Rosenthal, Model 470-20, Germany, 1960s–1970s A rare and sculptural glass vase designed by Finnish master Tapio Wirkkala for Rosenthal. Measuring approximately 20 cm in height, 17 cm in width, and 14.5 cm in depth, this work exemplifies the elegant precision and organic formal language that made Wirkkala one of the most celebrated designers of the 20th century. The vase’s carefully balanced proportions and fluid geometry reveal Wirkkala’s deep sensitivity to material and light. Its sculpted contours shift subtly with each angle of view, creating a play of reflections that lends the transparent glass an almost weightless quality. Both functional and sculptural, this design distills the Nordic modernist ideals of restraint, harmony, and innovation. Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was a central figure in Finnish modernism, known for his work across glass, porcelain, metal, and wood. His career was defined by collaborations with leading manufacturers such as Iittala, Venini, and Rosenthal, where he became a key creative force in the postwar Studio Line. Drawing inspiration from nature—ice, bark, flowing water—Wirkkala translated organic phenomena into pure form. His works are represented in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Design Museum in Helsinki. Rosenthal, founded in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria, remains one of Germany’s leading design houses. Its mid-century collaborations with artists like Wirkkala, Bjørn Wiinblad, and Martin Freyer established the Studio Line as a platform for avant-garde industrial design, uniting technical mastery with artistic experimentation. Dimensions: height approx. 20 cm; width approx. 17 cm; depth approx. 14.5 cm. Material: glass. Condition: very good to excellent vintage condition, with only minimal wear consistent with age. A refined and collectible example of Wirkkala’s collaboration with Rosenthal, this vase embodies the meeting of Nordic sculptural sensibility and German craftsmanship. Elegant, timeless, and quietly powerful, it stands as a highlight of 20th-century design. General information International buyers - Import duties or taxes, if applicable, are the buyer’s responsibility. All items are described with care and accompanied by detailed photographs. Vintage and pre-owned objects may show minor signs of age; any notable flaws will be clearly stated and visible in the images. This is a private sale under law.
