Saint Francis, on the other hand, is much rarer.

Stef Uiterwaal was born as the oldest son in a Catholic family. His father was a woodcarver. Of the nine children, Stef and his younger brother, Jo, continued in sculpture.
From 1903 onwards, Uiterwaal started working in the studio of Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg in Utrecht. Then at the renowned studio of Gerard Bartel Brom, which was already managed by his son Jan Hendrik Brom. Both studios were of Catholics house and very important in the development of Catholic sculpture. In the evenings Stef was at the Civic School. After graduating, he first went to Amsterdam to work with a stonemason, then to Eindhoven to work with the sculptor Jan Custers, also catholic. Shortly thereafter he went back to Amsterdam to work for three years at a stonemasonry, presumably Tetterode.
After that, Uiterwaal returned to Utrecht, at that time not a thriving art city, but with a great Catholic art tradition. He became a member of the Dutch Circle of Sculptors, the General Catholic Artists Association, The Society of Art Love and De Ploeg from Amersfoort. In addition, together with Jo, he took drawing lessons with Willem van Leusden. A drawing club that experimented early on with new styles such as Cubism and became very important for the development of art in Utrecht. Here he also came into contact with Gerrit Rietveld with whom he designed some furniture.
In 1915 he married Christina Maria Jonkergouw. They had six children. In order to be able to provide for their maintenance, Uiterwaal concentrated on sculptures for church and residential interiors. Images that stood out in terms of styling, but were not appreciated by the public. Glasfabriek Leerdam saw something in his work and Uiterwaal made his most commercially successful piece for the glass factory, allong with other work, "Madonna with child" (1928). This figurine is still being produced.
His breakthrough in the art world was around 1929. He was given an assignment by the St. Bernulphusgilde. This guild was once founded to stimulate the Catholic arts and crafts within the Netherlands. His work was also featured in a number of books and during a group exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum.
His work was often compared to that of Alexander Archipenko and the criticisms were varied. It seemed that his work was mainly commented on the degree of Catholicism. In 1934 he showed drawings and masks to the public for the first time. These drawings were bleak in nature and were filled with expressive, somewhat repulsive, figures. The style of his sculptures rarely came back into it. In 1937 he had his first solo exhibition, where he also exhibited paintings. Although the attention of the press was waning, he still received many assignments. Even during and after the war, the orders continued, from churches. Among other things for a Sacred Heart Statue (1949) in Zundert. About eight years before his death, rheumatism developed in his hands which made working impossible.
According to Jaap Versteegh[1], the work of Uiterwaal and his fellow Catholic sculptors has been forgotten mainly by Jan Bronner's influence on sculpture (history). Bronner, professor at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, did not pay attention to the Catholic craft-trained artists in his overview of Dutch Sculpture. [2]
