The work first appeared with Laboccetta's illustrations in the French edition of the same year. 'The Tales of Hoffmann' is an 'opera fantastique' by Jacques Offenbach, the libretto of which was written in French by Jules Barbier, based upon three short stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann, and using Hoffmann as the protagonist. Containing five tales: 'The Interdependence of Things'; 'The Sandman'; 'The Mystery of the Deserted House'; 'The Lost Reflection' and 'The Walled-In Door'.
