„Gorse Fire” captures the intense light and heat of gorse blazing against the landscape, with layered fields of yellow, orange and pink interrupted by darker vertical passages and softer veils of colour. The surface is built up in multiple translucent layers, allowing earlier marks and colours to remain visible and creating a sense of depth, movement and drifting smoke. Painted in the artist’s studio in Ireland in 2026, it forms part of an ongoing series inspired by the dramatic shifts of coastal weather and light.

Lucy Birch is an abstract painter based on the west coast of Ireland. Trained in graphic design and later in product and furniture design, she spent years working in other fields before returning to her creative practice in her forties. Her work is intuitive and bold, acrylics on canvas shaped by the Atlantic landscape, its light, weather and coastline. She layers colour and transparency to build depth, leaving the history of each painting visible in its surface.
