ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The Olympic Suite consists of 50 lithographs and silkscreen prints chosen to represent various contemporary artistic trends. It was published to commemorate the first centenary of the modern Olympic Games. The selected artists work in a wide variety of movements and styles, from the hyperrealism of Antonio López to the abstraction of Sol Lewitt, including abstract expressionism, the geometrism of Arden Quin, conceptual art, pop art, the new realism of Baldaccini and Rotella, and the new fauvism of Dokoupil, among others. Among the artists represented are creators of great international renown, widely recognised by critics.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

An artist and university lecturer, he has worked at various art education institutions, including the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Damascus, the University of Fine Arts in Casablanca (Morocco) and the University of Aleppo (Syria).

In 1966, he graduated with a degree in Fine Arts, specialising in painting, from the University of Damascus, standing out as the most distinguished student in his year. As a result, he was appointed director of the university’s art workshops until 1975, when he moved to Paris, where he later acquired French nationality.

In 1983, in Paris, he obtained a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Paris (the Sorbonne), again specialising in painting, under the supervision of Jacques Nalard. Four years later, he completed a PhD in Aesthetics and Art Sciences.

His academic publications and studies on aesthetics are numerous, focusing particularly on art of Arab origin in relation to Western art.

He held his first exhibition in Beirut in 1971 (a group show; a solo exhibition followed in 1972); since then, he has exhibited in cities such as Rome, Paris, Alexandria, São Paulo, London, Amboise, Seoul, Barcelona, Vienna, Linden, Cairo, Dubai, etc. His collection is held in museums and galleries around the world
