The English musician David Bowie was photographed for Self Assignment on January 15, 1987, in Los Angeles, California.

David Robert Jones (8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016), known as David Bowie, was an English singer, songwriter, musician and actor. Regarded as among the most influential musicians of the 20th century, he was known for his constant reinvention and visual presentation, and is often referred to as the "chameleon of rock". His music, stagecraft and fashion have had a significant impact on popular culture.

Greg Gorman (born in Kansas City, Missouri) initially wanted to become a photojournalist, but when in 1968 he photographed Jimi Hendrix at his concert in Kansas City, he began a career as a portrait photographer, which has now lasted for 40 years.

He obtained his Master of Fine Arts in 1968 and began making portraits of actors and musicians. Many of these iconic black-and-white photos have become movie posters, CD covers, or magazine covers such as Life, Newsweek, Vogue, and Rolling Stone. Gorman's photographs have appeared more than 20 times on the cover of Andy Warhol's Interview magazine.
