Hockney s-a mutat din Anglia în California în 1964, atras de estetica sa modernistă elegantă și de climatul mediteranean cald. În 1966, în timp ce preda la UCLA, Hockney l-a întâlnit pe studentul american de artă Peter Schlesinger. Cei doi au devenit iubiți și Hockney a început să picteze o serie de opere despre piscine, deseori cu Schlesinger în rolul protagonistului. Unele dintre ele, precum Peter Getting Out of Nick's Pool (1966), A Bigger Splash (1967) și Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) (1972), au devenit ulterior opere emblematice.
