Rare Antique Meiji Period Japanese Kutani Porcelain "Thousand Faces" Tea / Coffee Set – Signed probably Nakamura, in Original Silk-Lined Presentation Box (Early 20th century)
An exquisite collectible Japanese Kutani porcelain export set dating from to the early 20th century.
This stunning set features the world-renowned and meticulously hand-painted "Thousand Faces" (Lohan / Rakan) pattern, showcasing dozens of miniature, detailed faces of Buddhist disciples accented with heavy gold gilt and vibrant iron-red, turquoise, and gold radiating bands.
The porcelain is remarkably fine, showcasing the masterful craftsmanship of the historic Kaga region (Ishikawa Prefecture).
Maker & Authentication:
Each piece is authentic and individually hand-signed on the base in iron-red enamel by the master potter/workshop Nakamura (中村造 - Nakamura Zō / "Made by Nakamura"). The cups additionally feature the prestigious Meiji-era export mark Dai Nippon (大日本 - "Great Japan").
The Original Presentation Box:
A major highlight of this lot is the original, antique wooden transport/presentation box. The interior is fully lined and cushioned with its original, vibrant saffron-red silk, featuring custom-fitted compartments designed to protect this fragile eggshell porcelain during historical sea voyages.
