Din seria Iberian Horizons

Influenced by the dreamlike atmosphere of “The Crystal Ship” by The Doors, this work explores the fragile boundary between hope and survival. Rather than illustrating the song, it echoes its hypnotic sense of uncertainty, inviting the viewer into a moment where the sea becomes both a physical and psychological landscape.

The painting captures the instant a migrant leaves the relative safety of the boat and enters the cold water, believing that the shore is only one final mile away. In the darkness, the coastline appears deceptively close, yet every stroke becomes heavier than the last. The lights scattered across the horizon shimmer between reality and illusion, making it impossible to know whether safety is approaching or slipping further away.

The floating circles become distant streetlights, reflections on restless water, fading memories of home, and fragments of hope breaking apart with every wave. The glowing vertical path through the centre of the composition suggests a silent plea for rescue—a final line connecting the sea to the shore, and the instinct to survive to the acceptance that survival may no longer be within one’s control.

The restrained composition and luminous chromatic layers invite contemplation rather than certainty. The work explores the emotional reality of migration through exhaustion, isolation, and the universal human need for help. It asks the viewer to imagine not only the physical distance to land, but the overwhelming psychological distance created by fear, darkness, and the relentless force of the sea.

Moabit has been painting for the past 29 years, gradually developing a distinctive visual language through decades of experimentation with abstraction, perception, and emotion. Iberian Horizons represents the culmination of these long-term artistic studies, introducing a mature body of work that marks the beginning of a new chapter, one the artist now feels is ready to share with the world.

For the fullest experience, play The Crystal Ship by The Doors, spend a few quiet moments with the painting, and allow the music and the image to unfold together. Let the work reveal itself at its own pace.

- The painting comes stretched.
