VARIATIONS - Sugai Kumi - Japonia

VARIATIONS ｜Sugai Kumi 菅井汲(すがいくみ)

In the artistic world of Sugai Kumi, a Japanese abstract painter active internationally based in Paris, France during the 20th century, "Variations" is the complete set of 5 works representing his iconic "hard-edge" (distinct outline) geometric abstract style. Created in the year before his death, it is a culmination series in his printmaking. The composition features a motif based on the letter "S", representing his initials and the curves of a highway.

"Variations" is not merely an arrangement of pretty shapes; it was completed through a stoic challenge to transform and fix on the canvas into graphic symbols the tension, clarity, and sense of speed of the moments he loved when speeding on the highway (autostrada) in a sports car.
