The Yamazaki Distillery holds a revered place in the history of Japanese whisky, established in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii as Japan's first commercial whisky distillery. Located amidst the natural beauty of Shimamoto, Osaka Prefecture, near Kyoto, it benefits from the region's pure, soft waters, which are crucial to its distinctive character. Yamazaki is globally recognised for its pioneering spirit and commitment to quality, consistently producing whiskies that are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide for their elegance and complexity.
This 2011 release of The Yamazaki Sherry Cask is a testament to the distillery's mastery of wood management and its iconic status among collectors. Matured exclusively in Spanish oak sherry casks, this expression is celebrated for its profound depth and richness, a hallmark of Yamazaki's highly coveted sherry-matured offerings. The scarcity of these particular releases, especially from earlier vintages like 2011, makes them exceptionally desirable to collectors, representing a significant piece of Yamazaki's storied past and a benchmark for premium Japanese single malt whisky.
Tasting Notes:
Colour: Deep mahogany
Nose: Rich dried fruits, dark chocolate, candied orange peel, with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg spice
Palate: Full-bodied and opulent, delivering layers of fig, prune, raisin, bitter chocolate, and a warming oak spice
Finish: Long, complex, and lingering, with sweet sherry notes, dried fruit, and a pleasant oak dryness
