Antique 1809 Original Graphite Drawing - Old Master Landscape Study by A. Merian
An exceptional and historically significant unique original antique graphite and pencil drawing on paper, dated 1809 and signed by the Swiss artist/academic draughtsman A. Merian (Basel).
The highly detailed composition is a masterful early 19th-century academic study (Master Study) after the famous 17th-century Dutch Golden Age etching by Anthonie Waterloo.
It depicts a dramatic overgrown medieval tower ruin rising behind a rustic stone cottage, with two pastoral staffage figures conversing on a country path in the foreground.
The drawing showcases magnificent period draughtsmanship, featuring precise pencil lines, meticulous stippling, and atmospheric shading that beautifully captures the romantic Neoclassical interest in Baroque textures. A true one-of-a-kind original work of art.
