Chronicon Pictum / Képes Krónika
The Chronicon Pictum (Illuminated Chronicle, Képes Krónika) is a richly illustrated 14th-century Hungarian manuscript, completed in 1358 during the reign of King Louis I of Hungary (Louis the Great).
Written in Latin, it narrates the history of the Hungarians from their legendary origins through Louis’s reign. Its exact authorship is uncertain, but it is traditionally attributed to Mark Kálti, a canon of Kalocsa and later papal chaplain.
It is known for its 147 miniatures, decorative initials, and extensive gilding throughout the illustrations. It combines historical narrative with medieval legend and reflects the political and cultural context of its time. It is an important source for medieval history, court culture, and the visual arts of Central Europe.
