A Ming Dynasty Blue and White “Klapmuts” Bowl, China, c. 1645–1650
A finely potted “klapmuts” bowl decorated in underglaze blue, belonging to the late Ming export style. The interior centre is painted with a frog, an uncommon and intriguing motif in Chinese porcelain, symbolising transformation and vitality. The cavetto is divided into panelled reserves enclosing floral motifs and precious objects, while the rim is ornamented with four taotie masks, a design derived from ancient Chinese bronze decoration and frequently employed on transitional-period wares.
According to Maura Rinaldi, this bowl belongs to the Miniature Klapmuts Group V, which she dates to circa 1645–1650.
