Artist biography
Born in Lisbon, Nuno Barbedo, known artistically as THECAVER, is one of the names that have most solidified the transition from graffiti to contemporary muralism. He began his relationship with painting in 1998, as a teenager, when he discovered in graffiti the freedom of expression and the graphic urgency that would mark him forever.
Since then, he has built a career marked by creative constancy: large-scale murals, collaborations in artist residencies, group exhibitions and incursions into parallel areas such as graphic design, sculpture, tattooing and illustration. This diversity is not dispersion, but rather the translation of a need to expand the plastic vocabulary beyond the wall.
His work is easily recognizable for its chromatic intensity, the use of defined contours and compositions that oscillate between figurative and abstract. THECAVER's universe creates hybrid worlds, where urban characters and symbols coexist with organic forms, suggesting a dialogue between street energy and a more contemplative inner poetics.
Based in Porto, but with stints in several world cities, THECAVER has been asserting himself as a border artist: irreverent and institutional, faithful to the roots of graffiti but open to contemporary and traditional art.
His work inhabits both the city’s alleys and galleries, international festivals, and advertising billboards.
More than a multidisciplinary artist, THECAVER is today a constant and versatile presence on the Portuguese art scene, representing a generation that grew up with graffiti and carried it to other territories, without ever losing the rebellious spirit that originated it.
