Viktorovich was a highly talented Russian realist painter, primarily known for his historical military art, his deep Orthodox faith, and his patriotic and monarchist paintings. He was a star pupil of the renowned artist Ilya Glazunov.

This drawing is reminiscent of the "Sky Riders" depicted by the American artist James E. Allen in 1935.
