Beskrivning från säljaren

Artist of the original work: Lucien Jonas (1880–1947), signed on the plate.

Graver / Publisher: Georges Hourriez (1878–1953).

La Procession / Défilé commémoratif ou patriotique (Nord de la France)

Technique: Original engraving (Burin / Etching) on vellum paper.

Period / Year: 1919 (dated in the engraver's hand).

Dimensions: at plate/ cuvette : 23 x 20 cm
dimensions total sheet : 55 x 35 cm.

Signed and dated on the plate in the lower right: L. Jonas / G. Hourriez (with the engraving year indicated).

Manuscript autograph dedication in pencil under the cuvette: « To my old comrade Lucien Jonas — G. Hourriez 1919 ».

Provenance: Atelier fund of the artist Georges Hourriez (direct family succession).

Superb and rare artist’s impression of an interpretation engraving with remarkably refined workmanship, characteristic of the technical virtuosity of Georges Hourriez, master engraver of postage stamps and banknotes.

The scene, powerful and highly expressive, was originally drawn by Lucien Jonas, renowned war painter and meticulous chronicler of popular and patriotic life in the Nord of France. It depicts a parade or official procession leaving the First World War (presumably in 1919). One can discern a solemn crowd consisting of top-hatted notables bearing medals, flag-bearers, local popular figures and children in the foreground carrying flowers.

This lot is distinguished by its autograph dedication dated 1919 by Georges Hourriez to his great friend ("old comrade") Lucien Jonas. This intimate proof, kept in the engraver's studio back, materializes the collaboration and close artistic companionship linking the two men, both originating from or closely connected to the academic art circles of the same era.

Condition Report
Overall condition: Very good overall condition for an etching of this period.

Details: The inking is exceptionally fresh, the contrasts of blacks and whites are very well preserved. Slight foxing and minute natural wavinesses of the paper in the broad white margins, entirely outside the illustration and in no way affecting the quality of the engraving or the legibility of the autograph dedication.
Piece never framed, kept away from light.
