The scene, powerful and highly expressive, was originally drawn by Lucien Jonas, renowned war painter and meticulous chronicler of popular and patriotic life in the Nord of France. It depicts a parade or official procession leaving the First World War (presumably in 1919). One can discern a solemn crowd consisting of top-hatted notables bearing medals, flag-bearers, local popular figures and children in the foreground carrying flowers.
This lot is distinguished by its autograph dedication dated 1919 by Georges Hourriez to his great friend ("old comrade") Lucien Jonas.
