WWI Trench Art 18-Pounder Artillery Shell Case – Eight-Drawer Cabinet – Dated 1916
An unusual and highly decorative piece of First World War trench art, constructed from a genuine British 18-pounder brass artillery cartridge case dated 1916, ingeniously converted into a miniature cylindrical cabinet containing eight individual drawers.
The original cartridge case forms the body of the cabinet, with the sides carefully cut and worked to accommodate eight curved brass drawers arranged around the circumference.
All eight original drawers are present. Each drawer pulls completely out of the cabinet and can be removed individually, and all fit correctly back into their respective openings. The workmanship involved in forming the individual curved drawers to follow the profile of the shell case makes this a particularly interesting example of trench-art craftsmanship.
Despite extensive searching, we have been unable to locate another directly comparable example featuring this distinctive eight-drawer construction, suggesting that this is an unusually elaborate and uncommon form of First World War trench art.
The base retains the original military/manufacturer markings, including the clearly stamped 1916 date, 18 PR designation and other wartime inspection/manufacturing marks, as shown in the photographs. These provide an excellent visible link to the object’s original First World War use.
The piece stands approximately 30 cm high, with overall dimensions of approximately 30 × 10 × 9 cm, och weighs a substantial 2,493 g.
The brass has developed an attractive untouched aged patina with areas of verdigris, oxidation, surface marks and wear consistent with its age and history. It has deliberately not been polished, preserving the character and patination accumulated over more than a century.
One small exterior drawer handle/pull is absent; The other 7 are intact. Please study the detailed photographs, which form an important part of the condition description.
A striking and considerably more elaborate form of WWI trench art than the more commonly encountered shell-case vases, combining a clearly dated military artefact with an ingenious and functional eight-drawer design.
