Travel – The Bound Journey
Sonny Insinna
With Travel – The Bound Journey, Sonny Insinna continues his Travel series, a body of work in which animals become symbolic protagonists and silent voices through which the artist reflects on humanity, freedom, vulnerability and the relationship between humans and nature.
A powerful horse occupies the composition, portrayed with a strong sense of anatomical realism yet immersed in an expressive, almost suspended atmosphere. Its gaze is intense and introspective, while the red thread surrounding its head and neck becomes the central symbolic element of the work.
The horse, traditionally associated with freedom, strength and movement, appears here restrained by a simple yet disturbing presence: the thread. It does not need to become a heavy chain. Its apparent delicacy makes the symbolism even more powerful. What seems fragile can become a form of control.
In Insinna's visual language, the thread recurs as a metaphor for the invisible bonds that limit living beings: fear, dependence, human intervention and the loss of freedom. The animal seems ready to move forward, yet something continues to hold it back.
The contrast between the horse's physical power and the fragility of the thread creates the central tension of the work. How much freedom can exist when the bonds are invisible?
The horse is therefore not simply an animal represented from life. It becomes a metaphor for every living being struggling to preserve its own identity and freedom within a world increasingly shaped and controlled by human action.
The delicate pink and pale tones of the background contrast with the dark body of the horse and the vivid red of the thread. This chromatic opposition creates an atmosphere that is simultaneously poetic and unsettling, reinforcing the idea of a fragile equilibrium between freedom and captivity.
As in the other works of the Travel series, Insinna uses animals as a means of communication. They do not speak with words, but through their gestures, gazes and symbolic relationships with the elements surrounding them. Their stories become a reflection of our own.
Travel – The Bound Journey is ultimately an invitation to question the meaning of freedom and the invisible ties that we create around ourselves—and around the natural world.
