Perpendicularly, (Territory)“ is a collection of photographs by Japanese photographer Hitoshi Tsukiji, who has been pursuing the meaning and essence of ‘city’ and ”photography" since the mid-1970s. While wandering around the city to find “something next,” he is captivated by the vibrations of light, the brilliance of shadows, and the beauty of form, and releases the shutter. The numerous illustrations captured with a penetrating eye are full of originality in contrast, texture, perspective, and composition, and make us think about the meaning and essence of the interweaving of time and space. Tsukiji is also a co-author with New Topographics master Lewis Boltz, and can be described as an expressionist of a kind of conceptual art that transcends photographic categories such as snapshots and landscapes. The unique double-sided book design by Nobuyoshi Kikuchi, a leading binding artist, symbolizes his attitude toward photography and the city as a photographer who has continued to search for “something” hidden in the city.
