Fon Legba Power Figure - Ouidah Region, Benin
This anthropomorphic wooden figure is characterized by a dense fusion of sculpture and organic material. A large head with prominent eyes, an angular nose, and a small mouth rises above a voluminous body largely covered in palm or raffia fibers. A second, mask-like face is depicted on the torso. A powerful phallic protrusion emerges prominently from the lower abdomen. The dark, earth-encrusted surface and the multiple layers of fibers make the object appear less like a static sculpture and more like a materially condensed ritual body.
The figure is attributed to the Fon Vodun in the Ouidah region. Legba occupies a central position there as an intermediary between humans and supernatural powers and is closely associated with thresholds, gateways, and communication. Phallic representations are well documented for Legba. The phallus does not refer exclusively to sexuality or fertility, but can also embody vitality, assertiveness, and defensive power. A Fon-Legba documented in a museum explicitly describes the erect phallus as a means of protection against harmful influences. The term "fetish of sexual power" should therefore be understood as a traditional description of its function.
Literature (selection):
Suzanne Preston Blier: African Vodun. Chicago 1995.
Melville J. Herskovits: Dahomey. New York 1938.
Henning Christoph / Hans Oberländer: Voodoo. Cologne 1996.
Some of the information and photos are generated by artificial intelligence and is based on published sources from the fields of ethnography, archaeology, and art history documents. Copyright reserverd for all info and photos.
