This large zoomorphic sculpture in beige crackle-glazed earthenware depicts a couple of pheasants perched on a rocky mound, a characteristic creation of animalier art from the Art Deco period produced between 1925 and 1930. This piece is attributed to the famous sculptor and ceramicist Louis Fontinelle, a major figure of the interwar era renowned for his stylized animal figures featuring sleek and geometric lines. Both birds stand out through their fluid profiles and elongated tails, perfectly matching the modernist dynamics typical of the artist's creations. The entire piece receives a beautiful glossy monochrome cream-white glaze, highlighting a network of regular fine crazing characteristic of the aging of earthenware. The object bears no handwritten or printed signature visible on the external surface, but the hollow reverse of its base features the factory reference or model number 147 incised directly into the body during molding. The dimensions of this large-scale artwork are 30 cm in height, 53 cm in total length and 15 cm in width at the base. The individual weight of the sculpture amounts to 2900 g. Regarding its condition, this animalier ceramic is in very good original general condition, the surface maintaining a remarkable shine with no transversal cracks, chips or restorations to report on the structure of the birds or the base.
