Neolitikum TWO STONE AXE HEAD CELTS
This lot comes from the private collection of Mr. J. Bahamonde who over a period of 20 years acquired his collection from various prestigious dealers and has now decided to downsize his beloved collection. His degree in ancient Near East and Roman Britain archaeology from Manchester University, one of the best in the U.K. and passion for ancient history is reflected in this intriguing pre-historic artefact.
Carved from gray and mottled flint, these finely worked tools display the skill and artistry of ancient stoneworkers. The larger celt features a rounded, plump body that tapers to a single cutting edge, with the opposite end narrowing to a point. Its smooth surface bears a rich ancient patina, with loss to the butt portion—a testament to long use and age.
The accompanying adze-type blade, of mottled grey flint, tapers to a sharp working edge and ends in a squared back. Aside from a few small ancient chips along the edge, it remains remarkably intact.
Both pieces are presented together on a custom metal base, highlighting their form and craftsmanship.
Size: 20.5 cm and 15.5 cm
Condition: Very good condition, considering age and ancient use; ancient patina.
Provenance: Ex New York private collection, prior with Fortuna Fine Arts, NYC.
