Kumi Sugai – VERSEAU (Aquarius) – Large Silkscreen – Signed & Numbered 45/150

【Description】
This impressive silkscreen print titled VERSEAU (Aquarius) is a quintessential work by Kumi Sugai (1919–1996), one of the leading figures of post-war Japanese avant-garde art.
After relocating to Paris in 1952, Sugai became firmly established in the international art scene, developing a distinctive visual language that fused Japanese calligraphic sensibility with Western geometric abstraction. During his celebrated “sign” period, he produced bold and symbolic compositions defined by clarity, balance, and strong chromatic contrast.
This work belongs to his renowned Zodiac series. The composition is strikingly symmetrical, combining deep purple, azure blue, and solid black in perfectly flat planes of color. The precision of the silkscreen technique enhances the sharp contours and graphic intensity, clearly demonstrating Sugai’s mastery of the medium.
Sugai’s works are held in major international museum collections, including MoMA (New York) and the Centre Pompidou (Paris). As global interest in post-war Japanese art continues to expand, large-format limited editions such as this represent both a sophisticated decorative statement and a compelling acquisition for collectors.
