Black in America (1997) is an influential photo book by the award-winning American photojournalist Eli Reed. The work is regarded as one of the most significant portraits of African-American life in the USA at the end of the 20th century. Here as a true first edition, first printing in excellent condition.
The book comprises 135 duotone photographs documenting the diversity of the African-American experience – from tender family moments to social unrest and the daily struggle for survival in cities.
Time period: The photographs were taken over more than two decades, from the 1970s to the late 1990s.
Themes & motifs: Reed contrasts scenes of joy and triumph with those of pain and grief.
Documentaries on the Los Angeles Riots (1992) following the Rodney King verdict, the Million Man March (1995) in Washington D.C., and the funeral of Yusef Hawkins.
The foreword was written by the legendary photographer Gordon Parks.
Magnum photographer Eli Reed was the first African-American photographer to be accepted as a full member of the renowned Magnum Photos agency (1988).
