Idea principis christiano-politici, symbolis CI. Expressa, á Didaco Saavedra Faxardo. Ab innumeris priorem editionum mendis expurgata. - Diego Saavedra Fajardo

Paris: Apud Fridericum Leonardum, 1660. 599 pages. 13.5cm x 8cm. Full leather binding with gilt decorated spine, and 5 raised bands. Early Latin edition of this famous emblem book by Diego Saavedra Fajardo, first published in Spanish in 1649. Comes with an engraved frontispiece, 103 engraved emblems (101 as called for throughout the text as well as an engraved emblem on the “Ad Lectorem” page, and one emblem commemorating Diego Saavedra Fajardo’s death at the end).
Rubbing, bumping, soiling, wear, and some damage to the boards and spine. The front hinge is nearly split, and the spine is fraying at both edges. Pencil markings on the title page. The title page is quite damaged and is fully backed with a new sheet (see photos). Pen markings on the “Ad Serenissimum” page. Page 57/58 has the corner torn off, not affecting the text. Pages 93-96 have a large piece of the corner torn off, and some of the text is missing (see photos). There is a piece of the top corner torn off on page 179/180, not affecting the text. The bottom corner is also torn off on page 599, not affecting the text. Browning, spotting, and water staining throughout. See photos for all described damages. The text and illustrations are clear, and the binding is a bit soft. Overall, and considering its age, a copy in fair+ condition.
