These small objects passed daily through the hands of ordinary people, spreading messages of authority with every exchange. Constantinus II, as Caesar, silvered follis, struck Cyzicus 333-334 AD. Obverse: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, laureate, cuirassed bust right. Reverse: GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS, two soldiers standing facing each other, each holding a spear and shield; two standards between them. Mintmark SMKΓ. Diameter: ± 17,3 mm RIC VII Cyzicus 81; Sear 17341. Extremely fine with most of the original silvering still present. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher. Constantine II: Roman Emperor 337-340 AD. After the death of his father Constantine I 'the Great' he ruled jointly with his brothers Constans and Constantius II. After the Empire was divided between the three siblings, Constantine II complained that as the eldest son he had received only a poor share of the Empire (Gaul Hispania and Britannia). In 340 AD Constantine marched into Italy to claim territory from Constans and was killed by Constans's generals in an ambush outside Aquileia. GLORIA EXERCITVS: (Dedicated to) the Glory of the Army. This legend and type appear on the coins of Constantine the Great, Delmatius, Constantine II, Constans, and Constantius II. They are regarded as bearing reference to the bravery and fortitude of the soldiers in subduing the barbarous tribes, especially those of Francia and Alamannia.
