Spanish school (XVII-XVIII) - Calvary with altarpiece frame

Important Spanish Baroque altarpiece with a painting of the 'Calvary'.
Carved and silvered wood, late 17th – early 18th century, documented restoration.

Beautiful ensemble consisting of a Spanish baroque frame in carved wood, with a large protruding cornice, decorated with moldings and vegetal elements. The frame is covered with plata corlada (water-gilded silvering, then tinted, giving this warm golden appearance), a technique typical of the late 17th to early 18th century in Spain.

Inside, an oil on canvas depicting the Calvary: Christ crucified surrounded by the Virgin and Saint John, in a dark landscape with a skull at the foot of the cross. The canvas has been re-stretched on a recent frame and attached to the back of the frame.

A comprehensive restoration report (several typed pages) accompanies the object. It describes in detail the professional treatment of the frame: cleaning, disinfection against wood-boring insects, support consolidation in wood, restoration of missing plaster and metal parts, final patina, etc. The frame is now solid and stable, with a beautiful antique patina.

Condition of preservation

Old frame with general wear, small gaps, and traces of old worm attacks, all treated and consolidated during restoration. Very pronounced age patina, minor defects, and missing parts consistent with its age.
Ceiling with general darkening, cracks, and some touch-ups and stains visible to the naked eye. Decorative ensemble, ready to be hung.
