About this series:
This piece is part of a series of preparatory studies in which I approach the theme of the Pietà, reinterpreting existing works in which I cover the image of Mary in blue, a color with personal symbolism.
The death of my mother was not only profoundly personal, it became the ground on which my artistic practice is built.
With a gaze rooted in the Catholic tradition, in which I was raised, and in the history of art, I revisit this personal memory through a series of works, drawing inspiration from the iconography of the Pietà, taking as my object of study the body of Christ.
In the traditional imagery of the Pietà, Christ lies in his mother’s arms, as she grieves her loss. In my work, the mother is gone. I become a body in mourning, unheld, in free fall.
Trough this works I lean into the tension between the grounded and the falling, explore the absence, the memory as a narrative and the power of the narrative to enrich our personal stories.
