Description from the seller
The SEIKO Sportsmatic Five 6619-8970 is an antique watch with automatic winding and day-date functions, one of the earliest models of the Seiko "Five" series, which debuted in the 1960s and became a global sensation. Historically, this model was released during the transition from the Sportsmatic series to the Seiko Five series. The 6619 family debuted in the mid-1960s as part of Seiko’s push to offer robust, accurate automatic day/date watches at accessible prices. It’s respected among collectors for a durable magic-lever automatic system, solid build (21 jewels, 18,000 vph), and the practical quick-set date arrangement that made daily wear convenient.
The Sportsmatic series was developed by Seiko with the aim of popularizing automatic watches. The "Sportsmatic 5” a derivative of the series, was named "Five" for its five functions: shock resistance, water resistance, date display, day of the week display, and automatic winding. Technological innovations include the adoption of Seiko's proprietary "Magic Lever" automatic winding mechanism, which reduced the number of parts, improving reliability and mass production. The integrated receiver plate increased assembly efficiency and allowed for lower prices. It was a huge hit in the market immediately after its release in 1963, and exports expanded dramatically from 1965 onward. In 1966, its sales surpassed the total production of automatic watches in Switzerland. The Sportsmatic Five 6619-8970 is an antique model close to the origins of the Seiko 5 and played a key role in supporting the spread of Japanese-made automatic watches in the 1960s. For detailed technical information on the caliber 6619A 21 Jewel, it is Seiko's automatic signature movement, introduced in the 1960s. It was used in the Seiko 5 and the Sportsmatic Week Date, making it a reliable and highly serviceable practical watch. Its distinctive features, such as the Magic Lever automatic winding, day-date function, and quick-set date, contributed to the spread of Japanese-made watches at the time. For this reason, it continues to attract many vintage collectors today.

■Condition: There are scratches on the case, case back, band and the Crystal Domed Acrylic has lots of fine scratches visible to the naked eyes due to long-term use. Lots of fine scars/scratches are in fact proof of real true antique vintage, as they cannot be avoided occurring after long term usage of more than half century. The watch is in good condition overall since quick-day-set device still does work precisely, but very careful handling, when set the time/date, is required due real vintage watch. The watch works properly but needs to be wound at your convenience daily by natural arm movement to keep more accurate time. It was functioning normally at the time of listing, so it should continue to function without any issues. Please be sure you are satisfied with the condition before bidding, so please check the photos and product description and ask any questions you may have (please note, however, that we may not be able to answer questions close to the end of the auction)
