AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Conversation in a tavern
Camillo Gioja Barbera (1829-1906)
oil on canvas
54*63.5 cm (with cornice)

Camillo Gioja Barbera, a painter about whom little is known. He was an artist active in Rome, probably between 1884 and 1903. Like many of his colleagues, Camillo Gioja Barbera had his studio on via Margutta and primarily dedicated himself to genre painting and the depiction of monumental interiors. His artistic approach is fundamentally based on an 19th-century realist philosophy, which, following the French artist Courbet, aimed to portray reality without any filter of academic idealization.
