Swan The Swan fountain pen, made in the United Kingdom by Mabie Todd & Co., with a celluloid body and gold-plated cap, 133 mm long and 8.5 mm in diameter, serial no. 302336, used with signs of wear but structurally intact, eyedropper filling system and original case.
Description from the seller
The Swan fountain pen, manufactured by Mabie Todd & Co., is presented in a condition of preservation appropriate to its age, maintaining its authenticity and original character as a piece of historical writing equipment.
The body and cap, made of black ebonite, show visible wear, loss of shine, and superficial marks, typical of prolonged use and the passage of time. No structural cracks are observed in the ebonite, indicating the correct integrity of the base material, although the overall appearance is clearly that of a used vintage pen, as seen in the photographs.
The engravings on the cap (Swan – Mabie Todd & Co.) remain legible, although softened by use, which reinforces its original and unrestored character.
The metallic clip shows significant wear of the plating, with areas of coating loss and surface oxidation, considered a common and expected aesthetic defect in pens from this era. This wear does not affect the function of the clip.
The Swan gold nib is structurally intact, with patina and clear signs of use. No cracks or fissures are apparent, although its flexibility and writing performance have not been tested, so a review or adjustment is recommended before continued use, especially considering it is an antique pen.
The filling system is a dropper type, typical of the early Swan models. Due to the pen's age, sealing cannot be guaranteed, and it is advisable to replace or review the internal seal before use with ink. This type of system should be considered by the buyer, both from a functional and collectible perspective.
The pen comes with its antique case, which shows notable wear and evident signs of the passage of time, and should be considered an antique accessory rather than a modern functional case.
Overall, this is an original Swan pen, with no apparent restorations, in honest condition consistent with its age. It is ideal for collectors, restorers, or lovers of historical writing, where authenticity and the preservation of its original elements are especially valued.
