Whitaker, born in England, left for Australia in the early 1960s, where he established himself as a freelance photographer. In 1964, he encountered the Beatles while they were touring Australia. Brian Epstein, the Beatles' manager, was impressed by Whitaker's photos and offered him a contract as a photographer and artistic advisor, after which the photographer followed the group closely for three years.
