George Jan Hendrik (‘Geo’) Poggenbeek (Amsterdam, 1853–1903) was a Dutch painter and is considered part of the later period of the Hague School. Together with Theo Hanrath, he apprenticed under Johannes Hendrik Veldhuijzen and also took courses at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.
Poggenbeek painted and watercolorized in a dreamy, atmospheric style and was strongly influenced by Anton Mauve, with whom he stayed for three months in 1886 at his house in Laren. His work is characterized by a moody atmosphere, soft and refined basic tones, and often a distinctive bright green color accent. His work is included in collections such as the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, as well as in numerous private and museum collections both domestically and internationally.
The work is available for viewing at our gallery. Furthermore, Art Dumay has a framing shop (celebrating their 85th anniversary this year) and a restoration studio. If you wish to make use of these services, we would be happy to hear from you.
