Kohlhoff belongs to the so-called "Verschollenen Generation" and his style falls within the "Expressiven Realismus" movement.

His early expressive works were considered "degenerate" by the Nazis, and in 1937 eight of them were confiscated from public collections as part of the "Degenerate Art" campaign. Other missing works are listed in the LOST Art database of the German Foundation for Lost Art.
