Biography
Salvatore Fiume (Comiso, October 23, 1915 – Milan, June 13, 1997). He attended the Royal Institute of Book Art in Urbino at a very young age, where he learned printing techniques. In 1949, in Milan, he held his first official exhibition, featuring the works 'Islands of Statues' and 'City of Statues,' which garnered significant critical interest. This exhibition allowed him to establish contacts with artistic and cultural institutions internationally. On this occasion, one of his works was purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Jucker collection in Milan. The following year, he was invited to the Venice Biennale, where he exhibited the triptych 'Island of Statues,' earning a cover feature on the American magazine Life. His works reveal an interest in Renaissance painting, particularly that of Piero della Francesca and Paolo Uccello. In 1953, he was commissioned to create works for Life and Time magazines. In 1962, a hundred paintings toured various museums in Germany. In 1973, he traveled to the Babile valley in Ethiopia, where he painted a group of rocks with anti-corrosion marine paints. At the major retrospective in 1974 at the Royal Palace of Milan, he presented the African Mona Lisa for the first time, now housed in the Vatican Museums. Subsequent exhibitions included one in 1985 at Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome, in 1987 at the Sporting d’Hiver in Monte Carlo, and in 1991 at the International Architecture Exhibition in Milan. He debuted as a sculptor in 1994 with an exhibition in Milan, although his approach to sculpture dates back to the 1940s. His works include pieces in stone, bronze, resin, wood, and ceramics, some of large size. Notable among these are the bronze statue at the European Parliament in Strasbourg and stone groups at the San Raffaele hospitals in Milan and Rome. He died in Milan on June 3, 1997. His works are housed in the most important museums around the world.
