A marine ivory okimono depicting a man wearing a wide, decorated kimono, shown holding a puppet suspended by fine strings.
The sculpture depicts a street performer or puppeteer (ningyō-tsukai, 人形使い), a subject cherished in Japanese iconography due to its connection to popular theatre and storytelling traditions.
Signed Gyokushi underneath the base.
The okimono is in good condition. Natural ivory hairlines. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
Okimono (置物), combining the kanji "oki" (置き, to place) and "mono" (物, object), refers to a decorative object meant for display. Okimono, popular in the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), were finely crafted sculptures made from materials such as ivory, boxwood, wood, and bronze.
